[email protected] [email protected] home about volunteering apply sponsorship wish list conservation conservation festival jungle info nature & community donate partner faqs blog more programs find out how you can get involved education & outreach we run an english teaching scheme to help improve the english language skills of the local community. the scheme is aimed at both adults and children alike. basic english skills opens up a wealth of opportunities and can transform lives. ​ ​ conservation bukit lawang is situated on the edge of the leuser ecosystem and you can easily enter the national park. the leuser ecosystem is the last place on earth where orangutans, rhinos, elephants and tigers co-exist in the wild. bukit lawang has the potential to become a serious eco-tourism destination and create income streams for the local population, so reducing the reliance on palm oil and destruction of the forrest. ​ ​ about us the ethos of the trust is to empower people, so that the community is involved in every aspect of our projects. we believe in small direct aid projects, where the funds go directly to the people who need them, and are not wasted on administration. we try to minimise the amount of money changing hands, and encourage volunteering. we are run by volunteers in the uk, only our indonesian staff are paid a salary. we currently employ seven local staff. we believe education is the best route out of poverty and through education young people are empowered to take control of their own future, and look for better jobs and begin better businesses, and are therefore better equipped for life. the bukit lawang trust centre is a dedicated education centre offering free kindergarten, free english lessons for young people and adults, a free mother and toddler learning group, a library and the richard cann reading room dedicated to learning about conservation and wildlife. we run extra lessons in maths, science and arts and crafts and we have a strong emphasis on conservation education. we also run a guardians of the forest education program teaching about conservation and protection of the national park, in the villages on the border of the national park. the centre is also used for science and maths classes, yoga, aerobics, as a voting station and other community activities. bukit lawang trust bukit lawang trust is a charitable trust established in 2003. at the bukit lawang trust we’re working to enhance the health and education of the community of the village of bukit lawang and the people of this region and to engage in environmental and wildlife projects in connection with the endangered leuser ecosystem. ​ we are a grassroots organisation. we were established in 2003 after the flash flood that wiped out bukit lawang. since that time we have worked with the community to improve the quality of life and education in the area and to protect the precious leuser ecosystem. bukit lawang is located next to the magnificent leuser ecosystem which is the last place on earth to find tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans living together in the wild. we believe that poverty reduction greatly improves conservation efforts and the chances of success, so we work with local communities to improve education and social enterprise to help protect this precious area of the earth. the global green belt is the earth's lungs and we believe we should protect it for future generations. volunteer ​ there are numerous ways to volunteer with us at bukit lawang trust. we offer packages from 2 weeks to 2 months. visit the volunteer page for more information, from english teaching to eco-farming and camera trapping in the forest there are many volunteer packages available where you can make a difference. ​ send
